Dental Sinus Lift
A sinus lift, sometimes known as a sinus augmentation, is surgery that adds bone to the upper jaw. The area of concentration is the molars and premolars with the objective of making them taller. The bone is added between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses, located on either side of the nose. In order to make room for the bone, the sinus membrane has to be moved upward (lifted).
When is a Sinus Lift Performed?
A sinus lift is done when there is not enough bone in the upper jaw. If the sinuses are too close to the jaw for dental implants to be placed, a sinus lift may be performed.
Reasons for a Sinus Lift include:
· The patient has lost back teeth or molars in the upper jaw and there is not enough bone for implants to be placed.
· Sometimes, due to the anatomy of the skull, the back of the upper jaw has less bone than the lower jaw.
· Periodontal (gum) disease may have caused extensive bone loss.
· If teeth have been missing for a long time, there may not be enough bone for dental implants to be an option.
· At times the maxillary sinus is too close to the upper jaw for dental implants.
· The sinus can get larger as a person ages and a patient may need a sinus lift as they get older.
· Sinus lifts have become more common over the past decade as more people are getting dental implants to replace missing teeth.
