Tooth Fillings
A dental restoration or dental filling is a dental restorative process in which material is used artificially to restore the function, integrity and morphology of missing tooth structure. The structural loss typically results from cavities or external trauma.
Restoring a tooth requires two steps. First the tooth must be prepared for the placement of restorative material. Then the placement of restorative material takes place.
The process of preparation generally involves shaping the tooth with dental burrs to remove any dental decay and parts of the tooth that are structurally unsound. The purpose of this is to make space for the planned restorative material. Once the tooth is prepared, various materials may be used including gold, amalgam, dental composites, resin-reinforced glass ionomers, porcelain or other materials.
When preparing a tooth for a restoration, the most important factor to consider is the extent of tooth decay. This will determine the method and choice of material for restoration. Unsupported tooth structure is also an important factor to consider.
