Dental Inlay and Onlay
These dental restorations are indirect. They require two visits and fabrication by a dental laboratory. An inlay is similar to a filling and lies inside the cusp tips of the tooth. They are custom-made to fit the prepared cavity and are then cemented into place. An onlay is a more extensive reconstruction that covers one or more cusps of a tooth. Onlays are indicated in situations where a substantial reconstruction is required.
In certain cases, inlays and onlays are an alternative to full coverage dental crowns. Sometimes known as indirect fillings, inlays and onlays offer a well-fitted, strong and long lasting solution to tooth decay. Dental inlays and onlays are great from from both an aesthetic and functional standpoint. Inlays and onlays can often be used as an alternative to traditional dental fillings to treat both tooth decay and other structural damage. Different from dental fillings that are molded into place within the mouth during a dental visit, inlays and onlays are produced in the dental lab prior to being fitted and bonded to the damaged tooth.
