Teeth Whitening Q & A

My teeth are yellow. Should I consider teeth whitening?

Yes. Professional teeth whitening provides a quick and convenient treatment for yellow, brown, or generally discolored teeth. Several professional teeth whitening treatments are available, but Prestige 5th Avenue Dental uses Philips Zoom.

Philips Zoom uses hydrogen peroxide gel to penetrate your tooth enamel, oxidizing the discolored molecules deep within. The oxidation process erases flaws and blemishes to give you a Hollywood-worthy grin.

What causes teeth to change color?

Teeth change color for various reasons, but the most common cause is aging. The older you get, the more your tooth enamel wears away, revealing the yellow dentin underneath.

Other things that contribute to tooth discoloration include:

  • Drinking wine, coffee, and soda
  • Eating foods that stain, like tomatoes or berries
  • Taking medication with tetracycline
  • Using tobacco
  • Oral trauma

You’re also more likely to experience discolored teeth if you don’t brush and floss regularly.

What does teeth whitening treatment involve?

At Prestige 5th Avenue Dental, Dr. Simkha offers in-office teeth whitening with Philips Zoom.

If Dr. Simkha determines you’re a good candidate for teeth whitening, she covers your tongue and gums with a protective dam and applies hydrogen peroxide gel to each of your teeth. The gel sits for 15-20 minutes while your tooth enamel absorbs it.

After the absorption process is complete, Dr. Simkha points an ultraviolet (UV) light at your teeth. The UV light triggers a whitening reaction, eliminating stains and buildup.

Dr. Simkha repeats the same steps 2-3 times until you’re pleased with the final results. The entire teeth whitening process takes 45 minutes or less.

How long do the results of Zoom teeth whitening last?

Zoom teeth whitening results last 3-4 months on average*, sometimes longer. To maintain your results, Dr. Simkha recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting Prestige 5th Avenue Dental every six months for professional teeth cleaning.

Also, avoid habits that can stain your teeth. For example, if you use tobacco, try to quit. Likewise, if you regularly drink beverages like coffee or soda, use a straw to reduce the risk of staining.
